If you are looking for a book that aligns with Values Based Leadership… this is it. Reading through John Mackey and Raj Sisodia’s book Conscious Capitalism, I saw many parallels to the work we do here at Luck Companies. Throughout the book they put an emphasis on discovering your purpose (as an organization) and the values you wish associates to align with and then help you understand why and how to incorporate this work on a daily basis. Mackey and Sisodia talk about the importance of this work- not just for your business or your associates, but for society as a whole.
This energizing read reminds us that the “blame for [lack of engagement] does not lie with “lazy and unmotivated” workers, but with companies that fail to create purposeful workplaces in which people are given the opportunity to find meaning, purpose, and happiness in their own lives by contributing to the valuable work of the company” (54). The examples they pull from our modern day society- Whole Foods, The Container Store, Southwest, and more- showcase how simple and important this work is… and that making meaning AND making money are both possible and vital.
Even further then discussing the work and time a company needs to dedicate to this journey, Conscious Capitalism has an emphasis on taking ownership for the leader you are. They mention different forms of intelligence and how you can continue to increase yours as well as discussing the qualities of a conscious leader. All of this fits nicely in with Luck Companies’ reminder that “Leadership is a conscious choice to work first on yourself to in turn positively impact the lives of those around you.”
